Introduction

In this tutorial I wont go in pedantic details but just give a general direction with pictures and examples how to make a simple background check for a player who is playing on our server(s).

PBSS

A player who is playing on our server(s) will return PBSS's (PunkBuster Screen Shots). These can be found for server1 fromhttp://12.180.48.12/ and for server2 from http://12.180.48.38/.

PBSS

From picture1. By
clicking the number series on the left of player's name you will see
the PBSS of that player. Other information that this page gives is
the Playername, player's GUID number (unique for every player) and
the time when PB captured the SS.

Account History

Now when you have the name of the player and his GUID you can check his account history. This can be done at http://www.aa-accounthistory.com/index.php.

Picture 2.

In Picture2. It shows
a account history search tool. In the middle you can choose which
searching method you will use. If you choose “Current user name”
place a players name in the box on the left side. Alternatively you
can choose “Punkbuster GUID” and place the player's GUID on the
box on the left. Press Search!

In picture3. Are the
search results. There is player's Name, GUID, Mac address, IP address
and last time he have played. Now click the GUID number ( enclosed
with a red ellipse) to get more information.

In picture4. You can
find other IP-addresses, other Mac-addresses and other names player
have used in the past. It shows the Current bans and other accounts
that are linked to the player. Player =[C]=Rauski=[C]= is not linked
to any other accounts so that's why it's not showing any links to
others. Lets take another example.

In picture5. Player
=[C]=T-BONE=[C]= is linked to 4 other accounts by mac-address or by
IP-address or by both. Even though it shows links to other account
over here it DOESN'T mean he's the one who owns the other accounts.

Why?
People can have same IP address because of Dynamic
IP address, because it is always changing. Sometimes people are
fortunate, and their ISP has assigned them an IP address which will
remain with them for a very long time, or sometimes even permanently.
This is known as a Static IP Address, because it is constant.

With
Mac addresses account history shows only part of the actual address.
The last 2 digits are marked as XX. These 2 X's can be anything
between 0 – 9 and A – F so therefore there can be 256 other
accounts holding the “same” mac address that is shown with the
tool.

Accounts

Lets take another example.

Picture6.

In picture6. We can see this account Shadoww91 (marked
as green) is linked to many accounts due his DYNAMIC IP address.
There is also 4 accounts marked as red. These Accounts are BANNED by
ACI already. If they are marked as yellow they are banned by some
other anti cheat group. Well is player Shadoww91 linked to these
banned accounts. Yes, no, maybe and how can I tell?

Like I told before linked only by ip or mac can linked
you to many other players as well. If player's both ip and mac
address are same as banned player he still might not be really linked
to the banned player.

Player Shadoww91 is NOT linked to any of these banned
accounts. Well how will I know when player is linked or not?

In picture6 on the right of every linked account there
is a box “View link info” By clicking the box it will show a
linking information between those 2 players.

Picture7.

In picture7 There's a linking information between
Shadoww91 and Sniped accounts. Top of the picture it says they are
linked by ip address but they are not linked by mac address.
Shadoww91 account is marked here as green background and sniped is
marked as blue. There is a lot of other results when scrolling down
that are not in this picture but viewing all of them it's clear these
2 players have never logged from same IP-address in same period of
time.

Lets take a DIRTY example then.

In picture8 player Fight-4-Justice! Is linked to 3
banned players. Lets take a look the linking information between him
and player [-Lonely-Fighter-] who is banned by ACI.

In picture9 the linking information tells that they are
linked by IP and Mac.

Picture10.

From picture10 we can find that these 2 accounts have
logged in from same IP address in 30 minutes. This is case is solid.
Linked by IP, Mac and logging from same IP in same period of time.
Hacker down!

Conclusions

This was plain tutorial but it will get you started in
the world of BG checks. There is lot of others things how to catch
hackers as well and the best way to learn more is to read ACI forums
and take a example from others who have done this longer time. If you
are not sure about some BG there is lot of us in Company who gladly
helps.

fantyastic tutorial Rauski. ty very much for takin the time to make it.

The only thing i can offer to add is location links. cross checking IPs. between a banned account and a target account. If you thnk you have a link unsupported by MAC and not current use IP or account, can always try using

www.IP2location.com

to compare tyhe locations of the 2 accounts. if totally different states, countries or even sities, then likely not the same player. This information is how $ilk was actually shown to be innocent or at least reasonable doubt ( for the lawyers in clan). He shown that he lives in US, and the linked hacker lives in australia and that there were close together logins, proving he didnt fly to sydney to hack then fly home to play legit.

Yes i think should be sticky'ed. Quick question, in the members section why not have a section for hints, tips and secrets about the game and a section (in member section or not) Labeled Tech Help for all that need it instead of one general section for both??? Used to be a forum admin and i get lost lookin for stuff sometimes in the forums.

Subject: Help! First question Sun Sep 14, 2008 12:30 am

First problem: I brought up the link to www.aa-accounthistory.com and was unable to get it to work. I tried different names, including my own, and nothing happened.

I did make sure that it was searching by players current name and not guid. Nothing. So what am I doing wrong?

Second problem: when i pull the screen shot records of server one or two I cannot tell where the guid number begins and ends.

www.aa-accounthistory.com refers to an eight digit pb GUID number......

Choose one if u dont find in the other then choose previous username or IP Address

i know it works and have taught and help our other clanmates on how to get server 3 thru pbcool
